Layoffs are for real. Here’s how to future-proof your career.
Of late, job cuts are hitting hard, with companies like ByteDance slashing jobs right here in Malaysia – almost 700 employees were affected! Then there is also Lazada, which retrenched almost 20% of its workforce as part of a global restructuring plan.
These layoffs are a reminder that with the changing job market and trends like AI as well as automation, no jobs are secure. Job security isn’t what it used to be. But rather than simply hoping for the best, it’s time to actively future-proof your career (because you never know who or what’s next!).
Embracing tech, learning new tools, or branching into areas could be essential in avoiding becoming part of the statistics so here are some things you can do today to stay ahead of the curve and protect your professional journey.
#1 Upskill and Reskill Continuously
Look, AI is here to stay, especially when it comes to taking over routine tasks. So this means, to stay competitive in this evolving job market, you need to constantly improve your skills. With how things are going, we suggest focusing on tech-related skills like data analytics, AI, and digital marketing – all three which are in high demand at the moment. There are many platforms online or even local workshops for you to pick up new skills and certifications. You may have to invest in them but hey, it will be an investment worth your time and effort!
#2 Diversify!
So you’re good at writing content. How about creating content as well? Don’t rely on just one area of expertise. Being versatile allows you to pivot more easily if your industry or role becomes less relevant. Besides, being a talent who is more than a one-trick pony will give you an edge when it comes to hiring.
#3 Build a Personal Brand
In a competitive job market, having a strong personal brand can set you apart. Build a presence on social media, engage in industry discussions, showcase your work your own platforms. This not only helps in networking but also signals to potential employers that you’re proactive and engaged in your field.
#4 Experiment with Freelance Work
Having a side hustle is an opportunity to diversify your skillset. But do this only if you have the capability to and if it is not interfering with your actual work responsibilities! Do passion projects outside your main job to gain experience in areas that might not be covered in your current role. And who knows, in the event of an unexpected job loss, you may already have secured your next role!
#5 Pick Up Micro-Learning
You may not have time to sign up for a full-time course. But learning is everywhere! Instead of committing to certifications, you can try micro-learning – short, focused lessons that can be completed in as little as five to 10 minutes. This allows you to upskill without needing to dedicate hours at a time.
