Young Talent Making a Huge Impact in Dell Technologies

A majority of young people are eager to study, gain experience, and use their skills in the workplace. Hence, it is crucial for organisations to invest in young talent. Alex Heng Kong Yew, Software Engineer 2 from Dell’s IT department, shares his thoughts on this.

Why is investing in young talent important for Dell Technologies?
The younger generation of talent will make up the majority of the workforce in roughly 10 years. Studies have shown that this generation has a tendency to be more innovative, which is crucial today to advance, especially in the digital and technology field. Nowadays, younger people value experiences, cultures, and belongingness more than the actual dollar sign. The greatest method to retain them is to invest in them so they can continue to grow and offer value to the business. I'm proud to be a member of the Dell Technologies family. The firm has demonstrated its commitment to developing young employees like myself not only through words but also through countless projects and deeds.

What is Dell Technologies doing to promote growth to fresh graduates?
We promote growth through initiatives that include employee resource groups, development programmes, team-building activities, competitions or hackathons and even sports! With events that are remarkably similar to those held on their campuses, these will help them develop the skills they need to flourish at work while also broadening their perspectives and experiences.

Describe a typical career pathway for a fresh graduate in Dell Technologies.
We use the balanced approach in a career path: One can have a good mix of joining development programmes and focusing on honing day-to-day skills. For instance, if a recent graduate wants to improve their technical skills, they can enroll in additional hackathons, workshops, and courses offered by Dell Technologies as they contribute to laying the groundwork and guiding principles for developing technical skills in the most effective and efficient manner.

If one wants to be more outspoken or grow in their soft skills, they can concentrate on joining more development programmes, such as an IT development programme, organising events such as CSR events, and even overcoming their fear of public speaking by pitching or emceeing at these events.

I have been at Dell Technologies for three years and counting. During the first year, I explored everything. The following years, I focused on honing my technical skills before honing my people/soft skills, which helped me advance to the next promotion level.

What do you intend to accomplish in the upcoming years?
I would like to continue developing my technical skills before focusing more on my people/soft skills because I would really like to work with people in a "people" job, such as a managerial position or in the product management field. As we are now permitted to travel more, I would love to win more hackathon prizes with my amazing team and participate in more sporting events (the Dellympics)!

Any words of advice for today's youth?
Remember to breathe and take your time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. When starting out, remember this saying: “To find out what you like, explore, explore, explore. If you find it, exploit, exploit, exploit.”

This means that it's alright to start exploring while deciding which career route, set of skills, or industry to enter. You won't be able to have it all sorted out at first. Exploit it to the fullest after you've discovered something that works. When in doubt, take your time, keep learning, and don't forget to seek out mentors or other people for assistance.
