Got a headache? Hit the essential oils for natural relief.

We’ve talked about the types of headaches. Now, how do you treat them? There are various over-the-counter medications available, but when you are seeking natural remedies to alleviate headaches, essential oils will do the trick without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.

What are essential oils, you ask? Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that contain the aromatic compounds responsible for the unique scents of various plants. These compounds have been shown to have therapeutic effects on the body, including the potential to alleviate headaches. Different essential oils work through various mechanisms, such as promoting relaxation, reducing inflammation, and improving blood circulation, which can contribute to headache relief.

Here are a few to try:

Peppermint Oil
Feeling nauseous because of a headache? Try peppermint oil! This essential oil contains menthol, which has a cooling effect on the skin and can help relax tense muscles. Applying diluted peppermint oil to the temples or forehead may provide relief from tension headaches.

A famous product that contains peppermint oil is Vicks VapoRub. Often applied topically to the chest and throat area, this helps to ease congestion and provide a feeling of relief during colds and respiratory discomfort. Try it the next time you have a headache - works for us all the time!

Lavender Oil
If you’re looking for something to calm your tension, lavender oil will help you. Known for its calming and soothing properties, lavender oil can help reduce stress and anxiety, which are common triggers for tension headaches. Inhale or apply it topically to the temples, neck, or wrists to relax and alleviate headache symptoms.

A simple way to incorporate it into your wellness routine is by getting an aromatherapy diffuser or lavender-scented candles and room spray. This can create a peaceful and inviting atmosphere.

Eucalyptus Oil
Those with sinus would know how irritating it is to suffer from a blocked nose that leads to a throbbing headache! When experiencing a sinus headache, eucalyptus oil’s invigorating aroma can help open up congested airways. Inhaling it through steam inhalation or diffusing it in a room can provide relief.

Massage oils and balms with eucalyptus oil can easily be found in local drugstores. Do note that it's important to read the ingredients list and verify the quality of the oil. You should also check any sensitivities or allergies you may have before using products with eucalyptus oil.

Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce headache pain. It also improves blood circulation, which can be beneficial for tension headaches. Diluted rosemary oil can be applied to the temples, neck, or wrists for relief.

Besides that, rosemary oil also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that can be beneficial for skin health. It may help reduce inflammation, soothe irritations, and improve the overall appearance of the skin. You may find this ingredient in various skincare products and body washes.
