How To Stay Calm In A World Of Constant Noise

By Aminah Madihah

Eliminate the constant stimulation in your life so you can have a moment of peace.

Have you ever felt like you have so much going on in your daily life? Between work pressures, social obligations, and never-ending notifications on your phone - It’s like you can never have a moment to be with your own thoughts. Don’t worry, achieving calmness is not unattainable. In fact, it can be something you can learn with conscious effort and a few lifestyle changes.

A main factor why you’re constantly triggered and on high alert? Blame it on excessive exposure to stimuli! When overloaded with information, you tend to lose focus (who can blame you with everything going on at once!), leading to a perpetual state of distraction. This leads to being frustrated and ultimately, not exactly in a happy place.

The solution? Get rid of the noise! Here are some tips how:

Digital detox
Yes, digital detox! It’s a thing. Limit your time on social media platforms, unsubscribe from unnecessary email newsletters, and establish designated tech-free zones around your house. Embrace the beauty of unplugging from the virtual world and reconnecting with the present moment.

Mindful consumption
Choose quality over quantity when it comes to media intake. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through endless streams of Threads, TikToks or Reels, opt for activities that nourish your soul, such as reading a book, listening to soothing music, or spending time in nature.

Set boundaries
Draw a clear line between your personal and professional life to prevent feeling overwhelmed. Learn to say no to commitments that don't align with your priorities, and don't hesitate to communicate your needs to others. Setting clear boundaries allows you to reclaim control over your time and energy.

Simplify your environment
Adopt a minimalist approach to your physical surroundings. Declutter your living space, organise your belongings, and surround yourself with objects that bring you joy and tranquillity. A clutter-free environment promotes mental clarity and reduces feelings of overwhelm.

Prioritise self-care
Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Always remember to check in on yourself while you’re busy with other demands. Engage in activities that rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit, whether it's taking a long bath, going for a leisurely walk, or indulging in your favourite hobby. Nurturing yourself is essential for maintaining emotional balance.

Bask in your solitude
Learn to embrace moments of solitude as opportunities for self-reflection and introspection. Disconnect from external distractions and spend time alone with your thoughts. Solitude allows you to recharge your batteries and gain clarity on what truly matters to you.
