We get it – job interviews are stressful. Who knows what the hiring manager will ask you! Which is why we always say prepare, prepare, and then prepare some more. You’ll find that being ready and prepared for your dream job interview will make you more confident, and in turn shows that you’ve done all the necessary homework for your job interview and that you’re serious about the position. It’s something all hiring managers look for – commitment, the interest in the position, and the determination to impress!

But where do you start?

Well, in the age of AI, ChatGPT can make prep work a lot easier. Yes, you heard us right – we’re asking you to use ChatGPT to do the work for you.

Hear us out: We’re not asking you to get ChatGPT to craft all the interview answers for you; we’re asking you to get some ideas and prompts on how to carefully answer some questions where you might otherwise be stuck. You don’t rely 100% on ChatGPT to help you ace your interview. In fact, you should already be 70% ready for it on your own and only use ChatGPT for the other 30% to refine your answers.

Ready? Let’s get started on how to utilise ChatGPT for your interview prep.

#1 Use ChatGPT to do the research for you
One of the key steps to effective interview preparation is researching the company you’re applying to. This helps you understand what your target employer is looking for and will allow you to craft your responses accordingly. Use ChatGPT to do the groundwork for you. Ask the chatbot questions like “provide me with some key insights about the company’s vision, mission, values, any recent news and development about their latest marketing initiatives” or “what are some of the main contributors to the company’s latest success”. ChatGPT should be able to generate some good insights about the company to get you started. It won’t provide you with complete information but you’ll have enough to work on first. Make sure to also cross-check the information on official websites, social media platforms, or news sources. Perhaps something interesting caught your eye that resonates with you. Use this information from ChatGPT to delve further.

#2 Research the role
Normally, the detailed skills and responsibilities associated with the role are listed on the job posting itself. But you can take it further with ChatGPT. Ask it to identify particular skills that will be important in this role and why possessing these skills will make you a successful candidate. You can prompt it by sharing the job description for the role and asking for more details. The answers will give you a better insight of what’s expected of you to better craft your answer when the interviewer asks how you can contribute if you were given the job.

#3 Use it to anticipate more interview questions
Another good way to use ChatGPT is to ask it to generate questions that employers typically ask for your role and the industry. This will give you even more ideas on what to expect so you can prepare ahead of time. Make sure to include your job description and the name of the company for better responses.

#4 Use ChatGPT to craft interview answers
The holy grail of the chatbot! That’s why you really want to use ChatGPT in the first place. Just make sure to use it right to fully benefit from it. To generate answers, input the specific question into the chatbot. We recommend you share information about your qualifications, past work experience, skills or maybe even your resume in the prompt to get more personalised answers. Try crafting your prompt this way: Draft an answer to to highlight my experience and skills. Here is my resume . Do remember that while ChatGPT may give you the best answer, it may not correspond to your personal experiences or achievements. The answer may not be accurate so you’ll still need to review the response and use it as a starting point to tailor your own unique answer.

#5 Practise mock interviews
We recently read an article where the writer used ChatGPT to simulate what online dating conversation may be. So we thought – hey why not use it to stimulate your job interview! ChatGPT can assume the role of an interviewer and guide you through an actual interview dialogue. Just provide it with details like the role you’re applying for, the company, and the job description. Then prompt it with this: Could you act as interviewer and ask me questions one by one? Input your response after each question and the chatbot will move on to the next question or ask a follow-up question. Be mindful that the responses can be generic and may not truly reflect a real-life interview scenario. But hey, better than nothing right?

Go one step further: Ask ChatGPT for feedback on your answers! Carefully review the feedback and consider how you can improve your answers.

Try it and let us know @Graduan. Good luck!
