Boost Your Memory!

By Siew Ching

Feel like you are blaming everything on your bad memory these days? Try these tips and you won’t be struggling anymore.

Can’t find your keys? Forgot what you need to buy at the supermarket? Didn’t do the work your boss asked for because it slipped your mind?

A foggy memory is super common – sometimes you’re just too busy or pre-occupied to remember things (like that deadline) but it could also be a sign of poor memory, which can be a huge problem.

Fret not, there are many ways you can help improve your memory to protect it from decline which is something that happens as you age. Try these for starters.

#1 Do some brain training
Sudoku, crossword puzzles, word games, memory games – all these are perfect for the brain training you need to help your brain stay healthy. In similar ways to muscles, the brain needs regular use to stay active and focused. A research found that people who did just 15 minutes of brain training activities at least five days a week had improvements in brain function in terms of working memory, short-term memory, and problem-solving skills. If anything, take this 15-minutes brain workout session as your me time!

#2 Physical workout helps
Aside from brain training, look to include regular exercise. It has been proven that exercise has a direct impact on brain health as it reduces the risk of cognitive decline and age and protects the brain against degeneration. Physical activities raise blood flow to the whole body, including your brain. This can help keep your memory sharp. Experts recommend at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity like brisk walking or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity like jogging.

#3 Get enough sleep
Sleep truly is the cure for many things! Yes, even your memory. Disrupting your natural sleep cycle can lead to cognitive impairments. Ever had those moments where you’re so out of it and can’t seem to remember or focus on anything because you’ve had a few late nights? True story: After a few late nights, a friend completely forgot her password to unlock her laptop! And since she couldn’t work that night (again), she had an early night, rested well and guess what – the next day, she remembered her password as clear as day!

#4 Reduce your sugar intake
Do yourself a favour and say no to that bubble tea. Research shows that sugar may play a role in memory loss and is often linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Also, since we’re on the topic of diet, it is recommended that you also avoid high calorie diets as it can lead to obesity, which can impair your memory.

#5 Meditate
Those few quiet moments you spend in your room meditating will do your brain – and you! – a lot of good. Research suggests that meditation may benefit the brain by slowing brain aging and increasing its ability to process information. So focusing your attention in a calm, controlled manner will go a long way!

#6 Continue your hobby!
Don’t give up your love for knitting or drawing or playing the piano – all of these can be mentally stimulating and exercises the brain in new ways! Hobbies that require coordination will activate your motor skills – yes, even if that hobby is playing games on your iPad!
