How I Find Happiness At Work

By Siew Ching

The secret lies in doing the thing that puts a smile on your face.

For many of us, work is something we feel that we have to do rather than something we want to do. But given the average person will spend 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime, we say you better enjoy it.

For good reasons too! When you’re happy, you’ll enjoy what you do. You will work harder and smarter. You’ll find joy coming into the office. Even when you’re stressed, you know it’s only temporary because work generally is a fun, happy place!

Sounds like something you want to aspire to in your career – to find happiness at work? We speak to six happy campers who’s found the key to work happiness.

“I take breaks! When the going gets tough during my workday, I close my laptop, step away from my work desk, and go outside for a short walk. Or I just stand outside to get some fresh air. I find that when I step away from something that is upsetting or troubling me at work, I come back to it with clearer focus. And I don’t feel resentment that I’m glued to my table and laptop all day. Take that break – it really helps with the monotony of a 9-to-5. More importantly, it gives me a moment to walk away and just be by myself for a while, which I feel is very important for my mental health.” – Agnes

“Believe it or not, I’ve kept every single email or note that said something good about my performance at work or just a general nice, positive message. This helps keep my spirit up and whenever I read it, it puts a smile on my face, reminding me that I am good at what I do and work’s not that bad at all.” – Mike

“I have a happy playlist on my Spotify! I listen to it on my way to work and when I am completing routine tasks. With my fave tunes, it doesn’t feel like I am doing work at all. In fact, I am happy to be behind my desk, working, and chilling out to music.” – Syahira

“I surround myself with happy colleagues. You know the type – they have a smile on all the time, they don’t gossip or complain about work, they are not out there to get you and spot your mistakes! Thankfully, my team is a team of happy colleagues so even when we are dealing with a demanding client, it’s easy to go through the notions when you have positive, happy colleagues by your side.” – Aish

“I let go. Seriously – let it go! There’s no point being upset over someone or something. If I get annoyed, I just take a deep breath and forget about it. You’ll never see eye to eye with everyone, and the faster you realise that forgiving others or not letting things get to you, the sooner work can be pleasant for you. You can definitely find happiness at work just by letting go – try it!” – Michelle

“I just choose happiness. Yes, it is really that simple. You have two choices when it comes to work – you can either be miserable over it and stress over a lot of things… or come what may, you can take it easy, perform at your best ability, and choose happy.” – Tony
