Check out these tips by HR Director Choh Yau Meng on what Huawei Malaysia looks out for in future hires and what you can expect as an employee.

What are some of the top qualities you look for in a candidate? ,
“We welcome all types of talent as they bring a unique value to our business. There are no fixed rules for identifying or deploying talent at Huawei. As long as you are talented and willing to contribute to the team, you can find the right position to maximise your unique value. However, three words define our approach to human resources: Positive, Open, and Diverse. We also look out for candidates who have a strong sense of mission and a willingness to take on world-class challenges.

What can one expect when working with your organisation?
Huawei is an innovative, high-tech company. The business environment is constantly evolving, and new opportunities and challenges emerge every day. Candidates can certainly expect a fast-paced working environment as we want to give talented young people as many opportunities as possible. We expect candidates to be curious, to explore, to challenge the status quo, and to step out of their comfort zone.

How do your employees embody the company’s values?
Our core values are staying customer-centric, inspiring dedication, persevering, and growing by reflection. We stay customer-centric because Huawei exists to serve customers, and our success depends on the success of our customers. We always keep customers in mind when we build our processes, organisations, and operations management systems. We work hard to inspire dedication among our people. Staying customer-centric and inspiring dedication are closely linked. Dedication is reflected in any activity that creates value for customers, and in any effort to better ourselves. Inspiring dedication means assessing employees based on how well they have fulfilled their responsibilities. It means rewarding employees based on their contributions, and providing dedicated employees with more opportunities and incentives, both monetary and non-monetary.

We persevere in whatever we focus on. Huawei expects its employees to make real contributions in their individual roles, remain dedicated to the company’s ideals, mission, responsibilities, and never give up. We are also committed to growing by reflection because this is the only way we can prepare for the future. Reflection opens up new paths for progress. Like rowing a boat upstream, if you stop moving forward, complacency if we reflect, learn from our experiences, and continuously improve. As individuals, reflection helps us remain humble, open-minded, respectful, and cooperative. This is how we grow individually and grow together with our team, our company, and our customers.

What are some of your company strategies when tackling challenges?
Huawei’s values are more on hard work, craftsmanship, and accumulation. These are the important factors that Huawei can focus on and achieve the status of today’s industry leaders. It is also the best strategy to deal with all kinds of challenges.

How can candidates grow professionally at Huawei?
Huawei provides systematic training programmes for employees at different stages. For new employees, there are new employee training and orientation, mentorship programmes, and position-specific training. These programmes help new employees know the company better, learn the skills they need, adapt to their new roles, and fit into their teams.

As they work their way up, there are programmes that help them hone their expertise and management skills. All of our training programme lecturers are experts in their own fields. The best way to learn is through practice. It’s about learning by doing. So we provide integrated training and practice sessions to enable individual growth.
