CGC: A Culture Of Belonging

By Siew Ching

To foster collaboration and innovation, CGC (M) Berhad believes that first, one must establish a sense of belonging.

Think about this for a moment: You go to work five days a week, 9 to 5. You spend a few years there with just about the same people who work closely with you, day in and day out.

Now, wouldn’t you want to feel accepted at this place you call work? And if you are accepted, wouldn’t it make work all that much more enjoyable and productive?

That is what sense of belonging is all about, says Nazral Safril Bin Mohammad Sapari, Chief Human Resources Officer at CGC (M) Berhad. “A culture of belonging is an environment where all employees feel valued, accepted, and integral to the organisation. It fosters collaboration, innovation, and higher job satisfaction,” he shares.

Izzah Humaira Binti Mohd Nazri agrees with that, adding that “To belong is to feel like you’re in the right place. You want to go to a place where you are valued and heard without discrimination,” says Izzah, Executive of Management Reporting.

This is why at CGC (M) Berhad, embracing a profound sense of belonging is a given. Employees can attest to the company’s dedicated efforts to ensure that the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion resonate throughout the organisation, from top-tier management to every level. “I feel completely comfortable to raise my voice here, regardless of my position, race and identity,” shares Norzatil Yumni Binti Sabar, a Protégé from CGC Digital (Subsidiary of CGC (M) Berhad)’s Ready to Work Program. “As one of the first protégés here, I definitely feel the support and welcoming environment.”

Izzah shares that the all-embracing environment at CGC (M) Berhad is common, especially where leaders offer a sense of guidance as well as trust for employees to know what it takes to lead and be successful. She adds, “Most of my managers and superiors will give us a project or share an idea with us. It is then up to us to expand and execute it. For example, I was given the opportunity to work on a scholarship programme between CGC Digital and selected B40 students that would allow these students to pursue a professional accountancy programme. Being part of it was an eye opener, an experience I truly valued.”
