In celebration of the nation’s 67th Independence Day, we ask some people their favourite part of being Malaysian.

Every Merdeka, it’s been proven year after year that through every challenge we've faced, Malaysia has remained resilient and united, a true testament to the unbreakable strength and enduring spirit that binds us as a nation. Our unity in diversity is what makes us stand tall, no matter what comes our way.

But there are also many other reasons that make Malaysia, Malaysia! So we decided to ask some of our friends, what is their favourite part of being Malaysian? Here are their answers:

“Malaysians are renowned for their strong sense of community and willingness to help each other in times of need. You can always find people on social media sharing stories of fellow citizens who need financial assistance. It's heartwarming to see how quickly people come together to offer support, whether through donations, fundraising campaigns, or simply spreading the word to ensure no one is left behind.” - Afiq

“I absolutely love celebrating the diverse festivals we have in Malaysia! From Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, Deepavali to Christmas and more, there's always something to look forward to. What makes it even more special is the way my friends from different cultures warmly invite me to join them for meals during their celebrations, offering a taste of their traditional dishes. It’s a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural tapestry we share and the joy of coming together, no matter our backgrounds.” - Jason

“It’s supporting your national athletes during major events such as the Olympics! Just recently, my family stayed up late to watch the quarter finals badminton match. We were all on the edge of our seats, rooting for Lee Zii Jia. When he finally secured the bronze medal, the whole house erupted in cheers — it was a moment of pure celebration!” - Najihah

“Looking for a short getaway? Malaysia has some of the best tourist spots around. From stunning beaches and historical sites to lush rainforests and vibrant cities, there's something for everyone. You can explore bustling markets, savour delicious street food, or dive into the unique cultures of our 14 diverse states. Each one offers its own special charm, making it easy to find the perfect destination for your trip.” - Emily

“Has anyone mentioned the food? It’s something you can’t find anywhere else. Even tourists love coming to Malaysia just for the food! We have the rich flavours of nasi lemak to the spicy kick of laksa, every bite is a taste of our vibrant culture. Nothing beats the local traditional dishes we have here in Malaysia.” - Desi
