The Journey Keeps Getting Better

At RHB, opportunities are everywhere if you know how to seize them. We speak to Equity Research Analyst Justin Lee Wei Jie to learn how he kickstart his banking career by being proactive.

“Your career is in your hands, the more effort you put in, the higher your chance of success.” - Justin Lee Wei Jie

Currently with RHB’s investment banking division, Justin Lee Wei Jie is an Equity Research Analyst covering the telecommunication and construction sector. While on the buy-side at RHB Asset Management, his main responsibilities includes building financial models, meeting senior management of companies and recommending equities to in-house fund managers.

Like everything worthwhile, it began somewhere. For Justin, it all started during his time with the bank’s Management Associate (MA) Programme in 2019. Having completed his rotations in asset management, equities capital markets, and treasury, global markets throughout his two years of attachment, Justin now has the freedom and opportunity to launch the banking career he dreamed of while managing projects with high management visibility thanks to the programme.

Justin is also a member of the RHB Youth Council, which was formed in 2018 to encourage and nurture young leaders within the bank in driving innovative thinking, digitalisation and collaboration among young RHBians. Justin was appointed President in 2020, which opened doors and opportunities for him to get further exposure, including engaging and discussing creative ideas with the senior management team. During his time, he came up with numerous ideas for the bank’s ESG awareness campaigns, mental health programmes, and sporting events. He also worked with other RHB teams to put initiatives that the Youth Council had established into action.

Every journey has its obstacles. In Justin’s case, this was to balance his workload and expectations of his position with the various opportunities offered by the bank, such as the RHB Xcel Mentorship, RHB Melbourne Business School Leadership Programme, and RHB Youth Council. Time management was and always will be his top priority.

His key to success? Take on jobs and responsibilities beyond one’s comfort zone, he shares. Also be proactive and have an open mind. Prioritise planning so it eases the journey but also recognize ambiguity and uncertainty is part of the process. Don’t be fearful of making errors; instead, always keep in mind that it’s a lesson and use it as a reminder to avoid making the same mistakes.
