Why staying in can be the ultimate form of self-care.
I used to think that life needed to be a whirlwind of plans and activities: Brunch with friends, spontaneous meet-ups, after-work activities, checking out new cafes, going shopping alone. If my schedule wasn’t packed, I felt like I wasn’t living my best life.
But now I’ve embraced the completely opposite – staying in and being a homebody. And you know what? It’s fantastic.
Sure, being a homebody often gets a bad rap. It’s seen as boring or antisocial. I’ve had friends who used to say, come on – get out of the house and see us! But if I’m not feeling it, I am more likely to turn them down than succumb to peer pressure. Because why? I’ve learnt that staying in can be as fulfilling as any adventure out there. And sometimes, we often feel overwhelmed with the idea of having to always do something and the constant need of “being out there” that we forget to appreciate the time and opportunities we have to just stay at home and do nothing.
Especially when life today often feels like a race to see who can do the most in the least amount of time! But as a champion homebody, I’ve found that slowing down and enjoying your me-time at home can be a game-changer, and here’s why:
You get to be yourself, doing the things you genuinely love rather than being outside doing things you don’t really enjoy.
There’s no pressure to keep up appearances or force small talk. Who’s there to impress at home? Just you!
You’re in control – want to binge on the latest Netflix series? Want to read a book? Want to bake that bread? You do you!
Save money (and your sanity!) Going out often comes with a hefty price tag – from dining out to transport cost. It all adds up! But being at home? Totally free! Plus, you get to avoid the stress of crowded places and long waits.
It’s the best way to recharge your energy. Sure, socialising is fun, but sometimes it can be draining. Especially when you’ve had a long day or week. Spending time at home lets you recharge, both physically and mentally. Think of it as hitting the reset button!
Want to try being a homebody but don’t know where to begin? Here are some tips:
#1 Create a cozy space
Transform your home into a place you love being in! Add soft lighting, comfy blankets, and maybe a few plants. When your home is cozy, staying in feels like a treat!
#2 Set “home dates”
You don’t have to completely embrace the homebody lifestyle. Just block out time on your calendar for some time along to enjoy a movie marathon or DIY spa day. Whatever makes you feel like staying in.
#3 Try a fun at-home hobby
From baking sourdough to learning to knit, exploring something new at home can be just as exciting as trying the latest café or hitting the mall.
#4 Adopt a ritual
Make it all about you! Develop a home-only ritual like Sunday night tea-and-book before bed. These little routines make staying home feel special.
#5 Get really comfy pjs!
Nothing makes me feel like staying in more than super comfy pyjamas! When I’m all snugged in my favourite pair (along with my fluffy slippers), going out is the last thing on my mind. Who wants to deal with being sweaty and dirty outside when you can be cozy and comfy at home.
#6 Turn your home into a scent haven
Experiment with creating a homely scent that makes you instantly relaxed and comfy at home. Whether it is using candles or diffusers, find a favourite scent that makes you just want to lounge at home. Scents like lavender, vanilla, or sandalwood can make staying home feel luxurious.
Being a homebody doesn’t mean being boring – it’s about enjoying your own company. Get creative, embrace the art of staying in, and find joy in the quiet simplicity of home life.
