Random headache?

By Aminah Madihah

Let me guess….. Did you drink enough water today?

We've all been there. Out of nowhere, a headache strikes, disrupting your day. While many factors can trigger headaches, one of the simplest causes is often overlooked: Dehydration. Yes, something as basic as not drinking enough water can be the culprit behind those random headaches.

Incorporating the habit of staying hydrated throughout the day can be a game-changer, not only for avoiding headaches but for overall health. So how can you make drinking enough water a daily habit?

Here are some tips to help you stay ahead of dehydration and keep those headaches at bay:

Start Your Day with Water
Before you even think about reaching for your coffee or tea in the morning, make it a habit to drink a glass of water first. Why? After a night of sleep, your body is naturally dehydrated. You’ve gone several hours without any fluid intake, so starting your day with water helps replenish what was lost during the night.

Drinking water first thing in the morning does more than just quench your thirst, it sets the tone for your hydration throughout the day!

Set Reminders
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to forget the simple but essential task of drinking enough water. Between work meetings, errands, social engagements, and household chores, hydration often takes a back seat. Did you know there are apps to help you develop and maintain the habit of drinking water regularly? Try ‘em out! Over time, those regular reminders will train your brain to think of hydration naturally.

Carry a Water Bottle
One of the simplest ways to stay hydrated throughout the day is by carrying a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. Whether you’re at work, running errands, or exercising, having water within arm’s reach encourages regular sips and helps you meet your hydration goals. Here's an extra tip: Choose a water bottle that reflects your personality - maybe in your favourite colour or featuring a design or character you love. Personally, I find it adds a fun touch and motivates me to drink more water throughout the day.

Infuse Your Water
Let’s face it, plain water can sometimes feel a bit bland, especially if you’re trying to drink more of it throughout the day. The good news is that staying hydrated doesn’t have to be boring. By infusing your water with natural flavours like lemon, cucumber, mint, or other fruits and herbs, you can transform your daily hydration into an enjoyable experience that’s not only flavourful but also refreshing and healthy.

Track Your Intake
When it comes to staying hydrated, simply being mindful of how much water you're drinking can make a big difference. Tracking your water intake helps ensure that you’re getting the right amount to meet your body’s needs, and it can prevent dehydration, which often leads to fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

While the general recommendation is to drink eight glasses of water a day, the amount you need can vary based on factors like your activity level, climate, and overall health.

By making hydration a habit, you’ll not only reduce the frequency of random headaches but also improve your energy, mood, and overall well-being.

So next time a headache hits, ask yourself: Did I drink enough water today?
