Our Unsung Heroes

The strength behind every smile.

Fathers are the quiet heroes in our lives, in the background but always there. Their love and sacrifices shape us as we go through the circle of life, and it's time we celebrate these amazing men! Let's take a moment to remember the special ways our fathers have touched our hearts, especially how mine did.

From the very beginning, fathers were right by our sides. They hold our tiny hands as we take our first steps, cheer for us when we say our first words, and comfort us when we fall. I remember my dad teaching me how to swim. His hands steadying me afloat, his encouraging words for me to keep on paddling, and his joy when I finally swam on my own. I now swim in oceans with little to no fear thanks to the little swimming lessons he has given me.

Fathers work hard to give us the best life possible. One of the many things I will always keep in mind is “the life I provide for you is your choice to sustain and if possible, make it even better as you grow older”. Many of them work long hours and make countless sacrifices, ones we often never realise, especially when we were younger. My father often worked on his own, tired from a long day of finding the means to provide, but he never missed a chance to ask about my day or help me if I ever needed a hand. He made sure we never felt his tiredness, only his love and support.

They are also our first teachers! They teach us important lessons, not just with words, but through their actions. My father showed me the value of honesty and hard work. His responsibility as the man of the house has never been put second priority. As the eldest daughter, he taught me that not only do you have to be smart in school but in life’s lessons as well, making me realise that challenges come in all shapes and unexpected forms, and that the only way out is through optimism and perseverance.Through their example, we learn the virtues of humility, patience, resilience, and courage.

Fathers are our protectors, always ready to keep us safe. I remember when I had first arrived in London to pursue my pre-U, still new to the environment. One night, a nightmare scared me. My dad sat by my bed, soothed me until I went back to sleep, his presence making me feel safe and secure, even as an adult. It's these moments of protection and comfort that stay with us, long after the storms have passed.

The love of a father is often quiet but always present. It's in the laughter shared over a silly joke, the pride in his eyes at my school concerts, the warm hug after a tough day. My father’s love is in the way he would drop a little “how are you” after my long weeks of work or the way he would listen to my endless stories with genuine interest whenever we are together. These small acts of love are what make our bond so special.

Today, let’s celebrate our fathers. Let’s thank them for their endless love, sacrifices, and constant presence in our lives. Let’s remember the moments that make our hearts warm – the bike rides, bedtime stories, shared laughter. To all fathers, thank you for being our heroes, guides, and rocks. Your love and sacrifices mean the world to us. Here’s to you, our unsung heroes, today and every day. Here's to you, papa.
