Hear it from an insider, Vivienne Tiu!
At Dyson, I am a Design Engineer working in Research, Design and Development (RDD) Floorcare Department. I joined about two years ago after graduating from the University of Manchester, and it’s been an inspiring journey! Here are six reasons why you should consider a career at Dyson too.
You’re given great responsibility from day one. Despite having little experience, I was quickly entrusted to deliver solutions for live technology projects. I was also involved with multiple projects that allowed me to work together with people from various teams to deliver a project on time, on specifications, and on cost. While intimidating at first, I embraced the challenge and found myself growing and learning very quickly.
Dyson’s pioneering spirit. Unlike other companies, Dyson isn’t interested in making what is popular or what sells. It develops great technology that solves problems others ignore. It started with bagged vacuum cleaners that clogged and lost suction very quickly. James Dyson spent five years working across 5,127 prototypes to come up with the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner. Today, Dyson is continuing that pioneering spirit by developing radically new technologies that solve problems through ingenious ideas, and the power of engineering and science.
Dyson’s global approach to engineering. Dyson has a global engineering footprint. This means that I’m able to better myself and sharpen my engineering expertise through collaborating with my colleagues in the UK and Singapore, and also learn about different backgrounds and cultures along the way.
A culture of embracing failure. The path to developing technologies that perform better is no easy task – there’s bound to be failure along the way. Here, we’re encouraged to fail. Not on purpose – but in the sense that we’re encouraged to experiment with new ideas without the fear of failure. This is important if you want an environment that encourages you to think creatively, and not feel scared of being penalised or judged for having a ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ idea!
Vast learning opportunities. The sky is the limit when it comes to learning opportunities at Dyson! Apart from on-the-job training, you’re given opportunities to attend workshops that support your career development, be it technical or soft-skills training. As a graduate, I was supported by a detailed development framework to gain technical knowledge and drive my career. I was also paired with a mentor, who has helped me adapt. These have greatly helped me grow during my time with Dyson.
A culture of working hard and playing hard. Dyson cares for its people by creating networks and systems to support your wellbeing. Forward Dyson as an employee network brings Dyson people together to bond over shared interests and experiences. We are often encouraged to get off work on time and maintain a healthier lifestyle. My personal favourite spot is the on-site gym, as it allows me to stay active even during busy periods at work.
My journey has been deeply rewarding. I’ve been able to develop myself professionally very quickly, and at the same time, I’ve built some great and meaningful friendships. Above all, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some real and very exciting technology projects. I’m proud to say that I played a part in the technology that is now sold in over 80 countries globally. The knowledge and experience I’ve gained here are truly priceless.
