Course : Master of Petroleum Engineering
University : Curtin University, Sarawak
The Master of Petroleum Engineering programme complements a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Science, which has over 2,000 students studying a range of major engineering programmes including Applied Geology and Computing.
This is a master’s conversion course aimed primarily at engineers who do not have any formal qualifications in petroleum engineering, but have honours degrees in other relevant engineering disciplines. It is also available to graduates from other disciplines who have relevant work experience in areas related to petroleum engineering.
The first semester offers units such as applied geology and geophysics; phase behaviour and flow assurance; formation evaluation; and fundamentals of reservoir engineering while semester two covers drilling engineering fundamentals; production technology; advanced reservoir engineering; and well stimulation remedial and intervention operations. Hydrocarbon economics and project management; advanced numerical reservoir simulation; field development planning; and advanced drilling practices are covered in the final semester.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION/DURATION
The programme is course-work based and provides students with a multidisciplinary education in petroleum engineering. The full-time, 18-month programme is taught over three semesters, with four 25-credit units taught per semester. Students must complete the three semesters or 300 credits in total to receive the Master of Petroleum Engineering degree.

ADVANTAGES OF PURSUING THE MASTER OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
The programme offered at Curtin Sarawak is the same as the one offered at Curtin University’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia. The full learning experience and resources as well as access to i-lectures in Perth are readily available to students at Curtin Sarawak. Additionally, the academic staff at Curtin Sarawak work closely with their counterparts in Perth to ensure that the quality of provision reaches the same high standards. Curtin Sarawak collaborates closely with Curtin Perth not only in teaching but also in research.
Curtin University was recently awarded five stars overall in the latest QS Stars university ratings for 2015 based on its performance across eight assessed categories, namely teaching, employability, internationalisation, facilities, innovation, specialist criteria and inclusiveness, and three stars were awarded for research.
Curtin Sarawak’s location within the hub of the oil and gas industry in Sarawak and its strong links with industry players like PETRONAS, Shell, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration, Murphy Oil, Schlumberger and Technip, which operate extensively in East Malaysia, also offers distinct advantages to petroleum engineering students.
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Curtin Sarawak is the first and largest offshore campus of Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, and the first foreign university to be established in East Malaysia in partnership with the Sarawak State Government. It holds the self-accreditation status by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
NAME OF COURSE
Master of Petroleum Engineering
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with honours in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognised institution. Candidates who work in the upstream oil and gas industry with considerable exposure to core technical areas and those with degrees in other relevant science disciplines may be considered. The course’s English requirements include an IELTS score of 6.5 (overall) or no less than 6.0 in each section. Completion of a bachelor’s degree in which English is the language of instruction can also be viewed as satisfying the English requirement. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
