By Siew Ching

Love suspense? Love a whodunit? Then you’ll love these top picks on everyone’s favourite streaming services for a great twist, a superb what, and a splendid OMG.

Documentaries make up a huge part of Netflix – and some of the popular ones are those that leave you on the edge of your seat. Remember Don’t Fxxk With Cats, which isn’t what you think the title is but more about an Internet killer? That really got everyone talking for days, weeks, months!

Well, with some new titles popping up on your Netflix interface, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a host of many other true-crime documentaries to wrap your head around. Here are our favourites to watch right now. Tell us what you think about each ending after you’ve finished them.

#1 Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal
Hot on everyone’s playlist right now is this fall-from-grace documentary about one of South Carolina’s most distinguished legal families, the Murdaughs. The premise: It all began with Mallory Beach’s 2019 death in a boating accident where Paul Murdaugh was the alleged drunk boat driver. Then it gets even more mind-boggling: During the indictment process for that case, Paul and his mother Maggie were found murdered in a double homicide! As the story unfolds, people noticed other deaths linked to the family – that of Stephen Smith, a classmate of Buster Murdaugh, and Gloria Satterfield, a housekeeper for the family. What’s really going on? Time to tune in and find out for yourself.

#2 Girl in the Picture
If you love solving crimes, here’s one for you to true-crime sleuths. Girl in the Picture opens with the story of a woman dying on the side of the road who leaves behind a son and a man who claims to be her husband. That woman is Sharon Marshall but there’s more to her story. The story then focuses on Franklin Floyd, a man who kidnapped Sharon, raised her, and eventually marries her. Did he also kill her when things went south?

#3 MH370: The Plane That Disappeared
If you’ve not already watched this, MH370 obviously hits close to home. The three-episode documentary takes on one of the most devastating mysteries not only for Malaysians but the entire world. The documentary tries to address all the controversies surrounding the disappearance of the plane as well as pinpoints on what could have really happened. While there’s no apparent conclusion (still!) to the mystery, it’s an interesting watch on what happened in the aftermath.

#4 Ice Cold
Did she really do it? That’s the premise of this new documentary from Indonesia that centres around the alleged fatal poisoning of 27-year-old Mirna Salihin by her friend, Jessica Wongso. One thing is for sure though – you’ll look at your cup of coffee a little bit differently after this documentary.

#5 The Devil on Trial
Just in time for Halloween! The Devil on Trial recounts the brutal crime where the alleged murderer used quite a unique defence: The demon made me do it. 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson made national news when he murdered his landlord Alan Bono supposedly under the influence of demonic forces. The documentary recounts the troubling events that led to Bono’s murder, the trial, and the aftermath using firsthand accounts of the people closest to the case, including Johnson. Grab your popcorn, it’s going to be a wild one!
